Size of the Objects/Artifacts
The size of the objects/artifacts to be photographed will help determine if a precision photography tabletop studio or a larger studio design is needed (or both). The tabletop configurations are the perfect size for clients that don’t have a lot of extra space and are mostly photographing small to medium size objects. The larger studio configurations are designed to be more versatile allowing small, medium and large objects to be photographed as well as additional add-ons like a turntable for 3D and 360° imaging. Both systems are designed to produce museum quality images directly from the camera without the need for any post processing.
Size of the Camera Sensor
The larger the sensor size the more digital data is recorded, producing finer detailed images. CMOS type sensors are the dominant imaging technology used in DSLR cameras today. FDI configures studio camera systems around the two most popular sensor sizes (Full Frame) and (APS-C) based on their client needs and budgets. The DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) is the camera type that professional photographers use because of the ability to interchange all types of lenses and accessories. A Full Frame sensor provides the highest level of detail available in DSLR cameras.
Size and Type of the Camera Stand
There several factors to consider when FDI selects the correct camera stand for a customized studio system. Camera stands vary in sizes and types, from a tabletop copystand to a large free-standing studio monostand. Determining the height of the column that is required to raise and lower the camera can be mathematically calculated. To determine what type of column is needed is based on the budget and space requirements of the client. FDI selects the correct combination of camera, lenses, lighting and camera stand based on the following considerations:
- Size of the object to be photographed
- The distance from lens to object
- Size of camera sensor
- Focal length of lens
Size of the Lens (Focal Length)
Selecting the appropriate lenses for a studio system is also a very important factor when designing a precision photography studio. “A good camera with the wrong lens is a bad camera”. There are many factors in selecting the appropriate lens, but one of the most important is the quality of the lens and the focal length or size. Here too, there is a mathematical calculation to determine what is the appropriate lens for a specific camera. Decisions are based on the camera’s sensor size and subject matter. FDI researches which lenses are available for each type of camera and provides their clients with various options. Example: To capture images without any distortion, a full frame sensor camera requires a lens with a focal length no smaller than 45mm, whereas an APS-C DSLR sensor camera requires a lens no smaller than a 35mm.
Size of Image Files
File sizes can vary in sizes and formats based on the capabilities of the camera and the end user’s requirements. Most DSLR style cameras offer multiple image formats and sizes but the most common are JPEG and RAW. The larger the file size the more RAM will be needed in the computer that you are using to process and view the images.
- JPEG image files range from 5mbs to 10mbs
- RAW image files range from 15mbs to 20mbs
